Handmade Tile
New Tiles and FRAMES!
The tiles I blogged about last month are finished. I posted pictures of them in our online store, along with pictures of the wonderful new, Ohio-made frames we are going to start selling soon! These beautiful, handmade frames are from Family Woodworks LLC in Piketon, and we are very excited to have found them. These pictures do not do the wood grain justice. The hand rubbed finish is so much more beautiful in person. Almost every size of tile on the website will be available framed. 1"x6" border tiles will be the only exception- I don't think they would make sense to frame. If you disagree,...
Still Life with Fire and Bunnies
A big thanks to H.U. for sharing these photos of her newly tiled hearth, along with her bunnies, Pepper and Winifred! She installed an assortment of plant and animal tiles in Autumn glaze, including a pair of bunny tiles as tribute to her beloved pets. (A complete list of tiles appears at the end of this blog entry.) Doesn't the picture above capture an exceptionally cheery scene? A nice, warm fire with sun streaming in, along with a snuggly friend... what could be better? The next two pictures are close ups of each side of the hearth. Here is the left: And here is the right:...
Handmade Tile Kitchen Backsplash with Honey Bees
There is an emphasis on hand- crafted details in this high-end kitchen. The homeowners decided to frame a herring- bone pattern above the cook top.... .... and installed a 2"x2" Bee tile in each corner of the frame! Thank you, T.O., for sharing your pictures! A Mini Video of Sculpting a Handmade Tile
Last week, my dear friend, Mandi brought some art materials over to my house so we could catch up with each other while we both worked. (Craft dates are so fun! Note to self: I need to hang out with more local artists.) She shot some footage with her iphone of me working, then she quickly edited it into a tiny video for me. What a sweet thing to do; she is a solid gold friend. Here I am sculpting my oak leaf design into the 3"x3" size: This video makes me realize Darrell and I could make some more short videos of different parts of the tile making process. I had been avoiding videos,...
An Arts and Crafts Hearth
(When we switched to our current website, some lovely installation pictures never made it over from the old version of EmuTile.com. I am going to attempt to re- post all of those "lost" installations, starting with this one. Please note, this particular installation features "Northern Lights" glaze which has since been discontinued.) E.A. sent me these gorgeous pictures of her hearth. She ordered two of my 3"x3" Fleur tiles in Northern Lights glaze, and installed them herself. She found the field tiles on Craigslist and got them for a song; they were left over from someone else's installation. What a lucky find! They really complete the...

The First Tiles I Ever Made
Here we are, one week into 2015. As I write this, the wind chill outside is negative 11 F, but the days are getting longer and that makes my heart sing. The beginning of a new year always inspires me to do a little life review. You know the deal; Where am I going? Where have I been? Looking back, I realized that I officially registered my business name with the state of Ohio nine years ago yesterday. I actually got my vendors license and started selling a few tiles all the way back in September of 2004; it just took me a while to commit to the business name. It is hard...
Gifts From the Heart of Nature 2014
I can hardly believe it is that time of year already! The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, OH is gearing up for their annual holiday art sale/ fundraiser, "Gifts From the Heart of Nature," and I am pleased that my work will be included again this year. Darrell and I delivered several boxes of tiles on Sunday afternoon, and while we were there I picked up the above pretty postcard for the event: As always- many talented artists have work in the show! Here are a few of the tiles I submitted for the show this year: The show runs from Saturday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Jan. 4,...
