Handmade Tiles

...it would have been WAY faster to convert seven of my most popular 4"x4" tile designs to the 2"x2" size. But it would have been way less fun, so it is probably for the best that there is no such thing as a shrink ray. If you aren't familiar with my work, these tiles I just finished sculpting probably won't look all that small to you. But to me, they look amazingly, adorably tiny. Like fun sized candy bars. I have been making most these designs for several years in the 4"x4" size, so they feel like old friends. It...

The Custom Tile for Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve in New Hope, PA  that I started working on a few weeks ago is now in production! The first few tiles are coming out of the kiln now: I am very happy with how they came out. This batch is glazed in Spearmint glaze, which really brings out the detail in their logo. If you have a logo that you think would make a good art tile, contact me for prices and lead times.

Autumn glaze, that is. Check out the "autumn" leaves and trees I just finished. Here is a pseudo- panoramic view of the whole set of 4"x4" Tree of Life and Double Ginkgo Leaftiles: And just a few field tiles to go with them: I haven't listed field tiles in our online store yet, but I will make them on request. If you are interested, contact me for prices and lead time.

I love the combination of glazes on these four 4"x4" tiles. Clockwise, from top left: 4"x4" Spring Oak in Cinnamon Glaze, 4"x4" Elm in Buckwheat Glaze, 4"x4" Tree of Life in Autumn Glaze, 4"x4" Willow in Northern Lights Glaze. These four glazes play well together and with natural material like stone or wood. On these four tree tiles, they almost create a four- seasons effect, though I am not exactly sure which tile would represent which season. I am planning to use one of these four glazes on my submissions to the upcoming artTILE exhibition at indigenous gallery in Cincinnati. So excited to...

A new tile I started last month is ready! "Spring Blooms," a 4"x8" tile (shown here in leaf green glaze) is now available in the online store. A few words about the Leaf Green Glaze: It is absolutely one of my favorite glazes. It has a depth and richness that is hard to describe and, unfortunately, even harder to photograph. It is super shiny, the most glossy of the group, and no matter how I try to take good photos of it it always is either too dark or gets glare. In the picture above, I tried to photoshop out the bright...

Technically, my handmade art tiles are all natural and calorie free! But that doesn't mean you should attempt to satisfy your Valentine's sweet tooth with an "Emu Tile Sampler." Really, don't do it. Just because they look like candy doesn't mean they will melt in your sweetheart's mouth. On the other hand, if you are looking for a gift (for yourself or someone else you love) that can be enjoyed year round for a lifetime, tiles may be just the thing. Move over diamonds; tiles are not forever, but they last a very long time :-) Happy Valentine's Day from Emu...

Meet "Hazel Tree Interiors," the newest addition to the list of shops that carry Emu Tile. (60’ mural on the side of the building by Kelly James Tighe) As an UA alum with a lot of love for Akron, Ohio, I had been hoping for years that I would find a venue for my art tiles somewhere in the Rubber City. I can't imagine a better place than Hazel Tree Interiors. Today, I met Karen Starr and Jon Haidet at their beautiful interior design studio / framing shop on the near west side. I felt right at home there and...

Remember the new mold I made earlier this month?  The first set of tiles I made from it is out of the kiln! It is a set of four 4"x4" tiles that fit together to form a pattern that is about 8"x8" square, shown in autumn glaze.  I have added to the online store here and here. The design is based on the 3"x3" tile, "geometric blossom", and I think the larger and smaller versions would combine well.  In a kitchen, the 8"x8" version could go over the range or in another prominent spot, and the 3"x3" could be peppered...
