Handmade Tile

This gorgeous arched fireplace is part of a historic home in Illinois. While it may not be obvious, the green tiles on the floor are a recent addition. This is what the homeowner has to say about the tiles: "We had been looking for something that was beautiful and had the vibe that it may have been original to our 170 year old Victorian. Love them!" The field tiles are 2x4 and 2x2 inch size, the feature tiles are 1x6, 6x6, and 1x1 inch size. Designs include "tree of life," "leaves," and "flower." Glaze on all tiles is "leaf green."...

I hope everyone who celebrates had a great Thanksgiving. My "week of gratitude" lost momentum over the holiday weekend, but I am going to keep working my way though all the wonderful customer installation photos that I have been neglecting to post. This kitchen is in Oregon, and the photos arrived last July. It is now December. Oops! Better late than never, right? This installation shows that even a small grouping of handmade tiles can give a space a distinctive, personal feel.   Four 3x3 inch handmade feature tiles create a focal point above the stove in a field of...

My week of gratitude continues! I can't believe how long it's taken me to post photos of this hearth. These lovelies arrived in my inbox several months ago, and apparently, I forgot to post them. This is why I challenged myself to post more installation photos thank usual this week. I don't want beautiful pictures like these to slip through the cracks. The client wanted to create the look of a vintage fireplace in her home, so she found an antique mantle to install, and filled it with handmade tiles made by me and Clay Squared to Infinity. She's clearly...

I'm continuing my week of gratitude by sharing this delightful, authentic vintage kitchen (circa 1939) that has been modified slightly to include my tiles. This kitchen is located in beautiful San Fransisco, CA, near where I was born. Even though I haven't been back to the Bay Area for many years, it makes me happy to know that my tiles are installed there. It feels like a part of me is still there and always will be.  The sunny field tiles are original, and the homeowner was able to find matching ones at nearby Latch Tile Inc. in order to...

It is Thanksgiving week, and I am going to post as many customer photos as possible since I am very, very grateful for all of my customers. Especially those who take the time to send pictures of their installations! This bathroom is located right here in Kent, Ohio, in the home of a friend and fellow artist. A row of 6x6 inch tree tiles in leaf green and watercolor blue glazes creates a striking, colorful focal point over each of the two sinks in this otherwise minimalist bathroom. The limited color palette everywhere else helps the tiles to stand out....

Anyone who knows me knows I love my hometown, so it is always especially gratifying when my tiles are installed here in Kent, Ohio. This kitchen even features a "Kent" tile in honor of our lovely little tree city. This kitchen renovation was a major project that spanned many months. Here is what the room looked like in progress: And here is what it looks like now that it is finished: What a transformation! I am so happy that my tiles get to be a part of this wonderful space. Because the project started so long ago, it includes tiles...

This lovely kitchen is near Asheville, North Carolina. The multicolored handmade tiles were chosen to represent the flora and fauna in the mountains in that part of the state. The cream colored, square tiles in the center of the panel are antique tiles from an architectural salvage store, and the matching subway tile surround was made by Cevica. Here is a close of the tiles that I made for this project, before they left the studio. The following message arrived along with the installation photos: The tiles show trees that grow on our wooded property and animals that live here...

I am fortunate that I was able to attend the magical, amazing opening reception for "It's an Honor to be Here: Ohio Nature Artists in their Natural State" in Lancaster at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio. I had never been to either the city or the museum before the show opened, but I was charmed and impressed by both. I was especially wowed by the quality of the work and the diversity of styles and mediums in the show. I only wish I had taken more pictures. Here is a complete list of the artists who participated, as well...
