Cicadas spend much of their life cycle underground. They emerge from the soil after being buried for 1-17 years, depending on the variety of cicada. If they are lucky, the adults live long enough to find a mate and reproduce, beginning the cycle of life anew. A large brood of cicadas produces a surprising amount of noise.
