A Dream Kitchen, One Scone at a Time
This "birds on a branch" set in amber brown glaze has been installed in a splendid new kitchen in Washington state, and I was overjoyed to receive these lovely photos of such a thoughtfully designed space: Above: close up of the birds on a branch set over the stove Above: the whole kitchen; Below, the tiles along with other design elements before they were installed The photos came with a lovely message: "We've been telling people this is our dream kitchen, and your art is a central part of that dream, having people join together in a welcoming warm space. I...
An Artist’s Kitchen: Tiles in Conversation with Paint, Light, and Form
Some projects feel more like collaborations than commissions, and this one definitely falls into that category. This luminous kitchen belongs to fellow artist Jean Sausele Knodt, and I was thrilled when she reached out about including some of my tiles in her remodel. It always feels deeply meaningful when another artist chooses my work for their home. There’s an unspoken understanding that the details matter, that every choice adds up to something more than the sum of its parts. Jeanie and her husband brought tremendous thoughtfulness to the design, selecting a calm, natural palette with just the right amount of...
A California Kitchen with a Personal Touch
Sometimes all it takes is one thoughtful design element to turn a beautiful space into one that truly sings. When this client in California got in touch, her kitchen had just been beautifully remodeled: warm, mid-tone wood cabinets, black and pale gray counters, and a subtle, coordinating backsplash. It was calm, inviting, and full of natural warmth, but she felt it needed a little something more.... Above: The kitchen before the handmade tiles were added She discovered my work and selected a variety of handmade feature tiles to bring her vision to life. The glazes she chose: Honey, Gray, White, and...

Art Without Borders: A U.S.-Canada Collaboration in Clay & Enamel
Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with Canadian enamel artist Tim Laurin for his exhibition at the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario. Now that the show is officially open and runs through the end of the month, it seems like the perfect time to highlight this cross-cultural artistic exchange! For this exhibition, Tim took an innovative approach—starting with works by other artists and then adding his own embellishments in enamel. I was honored to be one of the 12 artists involved, and I was thrilled to see how he transformed one of my ceramic sunflowers into...
A Beach House Upgrade
The fireplace in a beach house in South Carolina just got an upgrade! The homeowners chose a mix of seaside plants and animals for their fireplace feature tiles- so fitting for the coastal setting. The combination of honey and spearmint glazes enhances the breezy, ocean-inspired feel, and I can’t get over how beautifully the honey glaze complements the hardwood floors. A turtle and octopus make an appearance among the 4x4 field tiles, along with other animals like a dolphin, crab and starfish. One of my favorite things about this installation is how they chose to frame herons and cattails to...
Emu Tiles are Featured in "Handmade Tiles: Creative Techniques," a new book by Marion Brandis
Wow, it is surreal seeing my work in a book, especially a book as amazing as this one. The incomparable Marion Brandis has published her opus: "Handmade Tiles: Creative Techniques" and it is such an honor to see some Emu Tiles in the mix, alongside the work of Angela Evans, Reptile Tiles, and so many other talented and hardworking tile makers. This means a lot to me because when I started making tiles over 20 years ago, I checked out certain books from the library again and again. I learned so many of the skills I use every day from books, and...
