Wild turkeys are native to North America, and are a state symbol of of South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Alabama. According to a letter he wrote to his daughter in 1784, Ben Franklin would have preferred the Wild Turkey over the Bald Eagle as the national bird of the United States, but there is no record that he ever publicly voiced this opinion.
