From Concept to Kitchen: a Handmade Tile Mural
I am thrilled to share pictures of this stunning mural in two shades of green that has been expertly installed in a kitchen in Washington state: It is accompanied by a beautiful row of "honey" glazed 3"×3" tiles under a nearby window: A vibrant row of red glazed tiles runs around the kitchen. They add a striking contrast and seamlessly tie the entire space together, creating a cohesive and visually appealing design. Here is a closer view of the honey tiles from before they were installed: The homeowners came up with the layout themselves using images from my website. Here...
An Ocean Montage for a Home by the Sea
This backsplash is a tile lover's dream! It was four years in the making because it took that long for the homeowner to collect this beautiful array of nautical and ocean themed tiles. It was well worth the wait; this montage is absolutely perfect for a New England home by the sea. I can almost smell the salty air! I'm honored that so many of my tiles are featured here, and I am also happy to see work by some of my tile making friends including Little Traverse Tileworks who made the sailboat, the anchor, and the number 4, and Dana...
Small tiles, big impact
I hope everyone who celebrates had a great Thanksgiving. My "week of gratitude" lost momentum over the holiday weekend, but I am going to keep working my way though all the wonderful customer installation photos that I have been neglecting to post. This kitchen is in Oregon, and the photos arrived last July. It is now December. Oops! Better late than never, right? This installation shows that even a small grouping of handmade tiles can give a space a distinctive, personal feel. Four 3x3 inch handmade feature tiles create a focal point above the stove in a field of...
A Vintage Kitchen in San Fransisco
I'm continuing my week of gratitude by sharing this delightful, authentic vintage kitchen (circa 1939) that has been modified slightly to include my tiles. This kitchen is located in beautiful San Fransisco, CA, near where I was born. Even though I haven't been back to the Bay Area for many years, it makes me happy to know that my tiles are installed there. It feels like a part of me is still there and always will be. The sunny field tiles are original, and the homeowner was able to find matching ones at nearby Latch Tile Inc. in order to...
A Kent Kitchen
Anyone who knows me knows I love my hometown, so it is always especially gratifying when my tiles are installed here in Kent, Ohio. This kitchen even features a "Kent" tile in honor of our lovely little tree city. This kitchen renovation was a major project that spanned many months. Here is what the room looked like in progress: And here is what it looks like now that it is finished: What a transformation! I am so happy that my tiles get to be a part of this wonderful space. Because the project started so long ago, it includes tiles...
A Kitchen in the Mountains of Western North Carolina
This lovely kitchen is near Asheville, North Carolina. The multicolored handmade tiles were chosen to represent the flora and fauna in the mountains in that part of the state. The cream colored, square tiles in the center of the panel are antique tiles from an architectural salvage store, and the matching subway tile surround was made by Cevica. Here is a close of the tiles that I made for this project, before they left the studio. The following message arrived along with the installation photos: The tiles show trees that grow on our wooded property and animals that live here...
A Bright and Cheery Texas Kitchen
It's a rare treat for me to see my work installed, so I was delighted when these photographs showed up in my inbox! I especially like how the tile panel shares the space between two windows with a well-stocked spice rack. It creates a visual focus that is both fun and functional. It feels very balanced, and entirely appropriate for a kitchen. A bright assortment of plant and animal tiles are interspersed with plain ones in matching glazes to make a unique and cheerful (and very cleanable) backsplash for the range. I was going to ask where they got the...
Blue Isle Kitchen
This post is a long time coming! The homeowners contacted me at the end of last year, just as I was getting ready to pause taking new orders for a couple of months so I could work on a really big project. They were willing to wait, but they needed a very specific glaze color for their project. Normally, I don't do custom colors, but I had some glazes that were in the right color family left over from a recent public art project. I sent a few samples, and "Blue Isle" was the clear winner! A sample of "Blue Isle"...
