Kitchen Tiles Ideas
A local kitchen with a splash of color
This lovely kitchen is right here in beautiful Kent, Ohio, just around the corner from the elementary school where I first experienced the joy of ceramics! I realize how lucky I am; not everyone gets to try ceramics in grade school. Thinking about this fact makes me realize that my community began supporting me long before I decided to become a professional artist. This is part of the reason I always vote "yes" for school levies, even though I don't have children of my own. Most of the tiles I make ship out of state, but I have definitely been...
A Northern Kitchen
Today, instead of making tiles I am working on the website because Darrell and I are having some work done on the house and it has spilled over into the studio. I should be pounding clay again tomorrow, but in the meantime (since I have home improvement on the brain anyway) I will take this opportunity to share pictures of this uncommonly handsome kitchen in Northern Michigan. What a wonderful mix of earth tones! The variety of natural textures really draw the eye and make a person want to sit for a spell in this warm and inviting room. An...
Urban Nature
Seems like I have been posting a lot of hearth photos lately! Let's mix it up and post some photos of a kitchen that proves that small is beautiful. This sweet little NYC kitchen looks out on a park, so the clients chose tiles that represent the plants and animals that they see outside their window. Nature is everywhere, even in one of the world's largest cities! They went with a fun asymmetric grouping over the range, and then sprinkled the remaining feature tiles around semi-randomly throughout the rest of the backsplash. The subway tiles are 3"x9" which works really...
A Periwinkle Kitchen
Here is a little secret: a lot of the time I think my customers are more creative than I am. They always manage to install my tiles in new and wonderful ways that I never would have thought of! Take this installation, for example: The homeowners wanted their sophisticated new kitchen to have some earthy, arty, one-of-a-kind features that reflect who they are as people. They came up with the idea to inlay a grouping of art tiles behind the sink. Each tile represents a plant or animal that has meaning in their lives. And because they are fellow Ohioans,...
Falling Leaves Kitchen
Getting pictures of this kitchen put a smile on my face. It is always a delight to receive customer installation photos! What a thrill and honor to see the creative ways that people integrate my tiles into their homes. These particular homeowners ordered 4x4 inch maple leaf tiles in autumn glaze, then asked their installer to spread them randomly throughout their kitchen backsplash, as if they were sent fluttering by a gentle fall breeze. The installer suggested turning them in all different directions to really give the feel of leaves in fall. The field tiles are by another Ohio tile company...
A Lake House Kitchen
My snail and frog tiles aren't usually oriented on the diagonal. For this special request, I modified them once they were out of their molds by cutting off the corners and reattaching them to make a diamond shape. (I promise I usually don't cut corners!) Only about a week after I sent these tiles out, I received these beautiful installation pictures in my inbox: I love the contrast between the black slate field tiles and white cupboards and feature tiles. The lighting in this room must be amazingly good, because these pictures really bring out the detail in the white feature...
Turtle Kitchen
If you have ever admired a group of turtles lined up together on a log, then you can probably appreciated this unique tile installation: What are those tiles in a contrasting color above the range? Turtles, of course! The 2"x2" turtles glazed in "pacific blue" add a sweet touch to this serene kitchen. Thank you, S.M. for including my tiles in your project and for sharing pictures!
A Rainbow Kitchen
At first glance, it looks like the homeowners played it safe with the color scheme in this kitchen. It has lovely, neutral colored cabinets, countertops, flooring and backsplash: But look a little closer, and you will see that this kitchen has a colorful secret! The backsplash is sprinkled with an assortment of bright little handmade two inch by two inch tiles featuring leaves and flowers. Here they are before they were installed... ... and here they are after installation: I love how the red tiles pick up on the red knobs of the range. Here are some even closer views...
