From Concept to Kitchen: a Handmade Tile Mural
I am thrilled to share pictures of this stunning mural in two shades of green that has been expertly installed in a kitchen in Washington state: It is accompanied by a beautiful row of "honey" glazed 3"×3" tiles under a nearby window: A vibrant row of red glazed tiles runs around the kitchen. They add a striking contrast and seamlessly tie the entire space together, creating a cohesive and visually appealing design. Here is a closer view of the honey tiles from before they were installed: The homeowners came up with the layout themselves using images from my website. Here...
More tile sets
Two new tile sets have been added to the online store. Both are customer-requested variations on this popular set: (the 6"x6" Tree of Life with 1" border) The first variation is just a slightly smaller version of the original. Here is the smaller version with my hand in the frame for size reference: (The 4"x4" Tree of Life with 1" border) The original version is approximately eight inches by eight inches total, while the smaller version is only six inches by six inches, not including grout joints. The next variation is a little more daring, as it turns the 6"x6"...
Old designs, new sizes
2019 has been busy so far. I have been making lots of tiles and getting lots of special requests, both for new designs, and for resized versions of my existing designs. Usually when I am busy I say no to these types of requests because it takes quite a bit of time to sculpt a design and pour a new mold, but this year I am trying to push myself to say "yes" more often, because it makes my customers happy, and is good for the business when I expand my line. It is not always possible, but when I...
A long time coming
This "new" design was over six years in the making! I first sketched out the idea for it on January 28th of 2012. I know the exact date because right after I drew it, I cheerfully wrote a blog post about it, and then proceeded to forget about it for over four years. (above: picture from 2012) Nothing more happened with the dandelion until the summer of 2016, when normal tile production was stopped for 6 weeks so Darrell and I could make improvements to the studio, and (to a lesser extent) so I could work on some new designs. The improvements...
A Cape Cod Bathroom
This may or may not be what is commonly referred to as "Cape Cod" style house, but I can tell your for sure that it is located in beautiful Cape Cod, Massachusetts; a place that is famous for its salt marshes, pristine beaches and diverse flora and fauna. The local plants and wildlife of the area are reflected in the choice of tiles for this bright and cheery bathroom. I love the way the homeowner chose to incorporate multicolored handmade tiles into this bathroom. The the lower third of the wall is covered with beadboard wainscoting. At the top of...
Maple Leaf Hearth
It has been far too long since I have posted installation pictures! Photographs of this lovely hearth showed up in my inbox this week, and there is no time like the present for me to share them with you. The client sent this explanation for their choice of tiles: "We tore out our old fireplace mantel/surround and I designed and built one more to the craftsman style we like. We searched forever to find the tiles that we felt would be perfect for the job. The leaf tiles represent the three types of trees we have in our yard. The black...
It is time for artTILE 2017 at indigenous gallery!
This is one of my favorite times of year. The blossoms are blooming, the leaves are budding, and indigenous gallery is having their annual artTILE extravaganza!! It is a huge honor for me to be a part of this invitational show. (They even put a picture of some of my tiny tiles on the back of the postcard!) If you have never been to indigenous gallery, you are missing out. I have been fortunate to be a part of every one of the previous artTILE shows, and they just keep getting better every year. There couldn't be a more perfect...
Three Festive Installations
I am so pleased to share these photos! All three of these projects are by the same family. They mixed different sizes of art tiles in various shades of green, brown and gold with 1"x1" small glass and quartz tiles to great effect. The kitchen island pictured above has a light under the edge of the counter so it looks extra pretty at night. The homeowners say they have received many compliment so far, and I can see why. They created a similar effect on a smaller scale for their hearth. They used 4"x4" handmade tiles along with more of...
