Have you heard? Detroit is back! And it’s thanks, in part, to homeowners like this one, who are preserving the city’s history one house at a time. The original stone fireplace surround in this charming home was absolutely worth saving, but the hearth tiles were not. I am honored that I had the privilege of making replacements! The tiles are mostly 3x3 and 6x6 inch plain field tiles in honey glaze, but the client also decided to place a single matching 3x6 inch cypress tile in the center to make a subtle focal point that draws the eye but doesn't...

I was delighted to receive these photos of a heron-themed, watercolor blue fireplace surround that was created as part of an eco-friendly restoration of a 150+ year old home in Maryland. I got a kick out of seeing the heron theme repeat in the tiles and the painting over the mantel. A pair of herons flank a cattail tile to create the central focal point of the tile installation. Other animals (and a few plants) also make an appearance on either side. The Herons and cattails are each 4x8 inches in size, and the other feature tiles are 4x4 inches...

This fireplace couldn’t be more perfect for a home affectionately called Green Heron Pond by its owners. Their 1990s house already had a lot to love, but the new tile has added just the character they were looking for. They chose "celadon" feature tiles depicting a pair of herons (of course!) as well as other animals. This is a picture I took of the tiles before they left the studio: The homeowners set the handmade feature tiles among coordinating field tiles from another source, and framed them all beautifully with honey-colored woodwork. The combination feels warm, welcoming, and just right...

I’m genuinely thrilled to share photos of a one-of-a-kind hearth installation at Westminster Shabby, a delightfully named, beautifully restored 1906 home in Brooklyn, NY. The home is shared by artist Syrie Moskowitz, whose expertise spans historical costuming, aesthetics, and fairy-tale scripts and sets, and her partner, Grammy Award–winning musician Stuart Matthewman. This project was a true collaboration: Syrie designed the layout, and I made the tiles. Few things are as satisfying to me as following a client’s “map” while creating the tiles, and Syrie's mock-up made that process a joy. It never would have occurred to me to mix these...

The fireplace in a beach house in South Carolina just got an upgrade! The homeowners chose a mix of seaside plants and animals for their fireplace feature tiles- so fitting for the coastal setting. The combination of honey and spearmint glazes enhances the breezy, ocean-inspired feel, and I can’t get over how beautifully the honey glaze complements the hardwood floors. A turtle and octopus make an appearance among the 4x4 field tiles, along with other animals like a dolphin, crab and starfish. One of my favorite things about this installation is how they chose to frame herons and cattails to...

I just have to share this incredible project by a very talented woodworker in New York state! W.S. built this stunning oak mantle and installed the tiles himself, and I’m completely in awe of how it all came together. W.S. chose feature tiles from my catalog that have a special meaning for him. These tiles are glazed in "spearmint," a soft and versatile green. To go with them, he picked "glossy jade" field tiles from Mineral Tiles, and I can barely believe how perfectly the two brands of tiles blend together—it’s truly a match made in heaven! One of the...

I did it again. Beautiful installation pictures showed up in my inbox, I didn't post them right away, and then, somehow, they slipped through the cracks. This hearth belongs to a talented nature photographer in Montana, and as you can tell from the turkeys on the mantle, she sent these to me back in November. Oops! Better late than never, right?  I posted these to my instagram page before posting them here, and people loved how the tiles wrap around the hearth. You can see it really well in this progress photo: Here is another progress photo that shows the...

Pictures of this gorgeous fireplace just turned up in my mailbox, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! That woodwork would be quite impressive by itself and together with the tiles it looks magnificent. Here are some close ups of the different plants and animals featured: What a nice layout- I love the combination of 2x2, 4x4 and 4x8 inch tiles they chose. The client wrote that she "wanted to send the photos to help inspire others to the potential of your beautiful tile. We truly enjoy our fireplace surround it’s everything I’ve wanted." Wow, my customers...
