Fireplace Tile Ideas

No, the mantle isn't made of birch; the handmade subway tiles that surround the feature tiles are in a new glaze called "birch" which I am a bit smitten with at the moment. It is so yummy looking, it reminds me toast. Or maybe a toasted marshmallow? Really pleased that my tiles are a focal point in this inviting New Jersey living room. One of the homeowners is a shop teacher so he installed the tiles and woodwork himself with great care and precision. He sent a nice note along with the photos that said, "Everything came out the way we wanted and your tiles added a signature touch. We get a lot of compliments." I didn't make the grey field tiles, only the feature tiles. These pictures arrived in my inbox in April of last year! Time to share them at long last. This installation was designed and completed by a lovely couple who lives right here in our neighborhood. The wife found some of my tiles at McKay Bricker Gallery in town, then ordered more from me as a Christmas present for her husband, who then used them to help transform a rather plain fireplace surround into a proper hearth. This hearth is in a 1929 bungalow that is being restored in the Arts & Craft style. The couple who lives there designed and built the mantel (the husband is a woodworker) and also chose, laid out, and and installed the tiles themselves. It has been far too long since I have posted installation pictures! I am so pleased to share these photos! All three of these projects are by the same family. They mixed different sizes of art tiles in various shades of green, brown and gold with 1"x1" small glass and quartz tiles to great effect. The kitchen island pictured above has a light under the edge of the counter so it looks extra pretty at night. The homeowners say they have received many compliment so far, and I can see why.
