Eco-Friendly Bathroom Remodel for the Nature Lover: Wildlife-Inspired Art Tiles and Sustainable Design Choices
You don't always have to replace everything to remodel a bathroom. Just ask J.P. who got a whole new look in both her bathrooms without replacing the solidly built vintage vanities that were already in place. Instead of tearing them out, she carefully selected and assortment of handmade tiles that enhanced what was already there. For both bathrooms, she asked me to add a light wash of black underglaze beneath the glaze to tone down the brightness and bring out detail. For the larger of the two bathrooms, the glaze is "honey:" In the words of the homeowner, "The little circles on...
Small tiles, big impact
I hope everyone who celebrates had a great Thanksgiving. My "week of gratitude" lost momentum over the holiday weekend, but I am going to keep working my way though all the wonderful customer installation photos that I have been neglecting to post. This kitchen is in Oregon, and the photos arrived last July. It is now December. Oops! Better late than never, right? This installation shows that even a small grouping of handmade tiles can give a space a distinctive, personal feel. Four 3x3 inch handmade feature tiles create a focal point above the stove in a field of...
A Kent Kitchen
Anyone who knows me knows I love my hometown, so it is always especially gratifying when my tiles are installed here in Kent, Ohio. This kitchen even features a "Kent" tile in honor of our lovely little tree city. This kitchen renovation was a major project that spanned many months. Here is what the room looked like in progress: And here is what it looks like now that it is finished: What a transformation! I am so happy that my tiles get to be a part of this wonderful space. Because the project started so long ago, it includes tiles...
A Kitchen in the Mountains of Western North Carolina
This lovely kitchen is near Asheville, North Carolina. The multicolored handmade tiles were chosen to represent the flora and fauna in the mountains in that part of the state. The cream colored, square tiles in the center of the panel are antique tiles from an architectural salvage store, and the matching subway tile surround was made by Cevica. Here is a close of the tiles that I made for this project, before they left the studio. The following message arrived along with the installation photos: The tiles show trees that grow on our wooded property and animals that live here...
Autumn's Swan Song
I have been using autumn glaze for almost 20 years and I love the warmth and richness it brings to a space, as well as how it harmonizes with wood and other natural materials. This kitchen is a great example of that! The backsplash was installed by the homeowner's daughter and I am impressed by what a good job she did. It turned out great and autumn glaze was the perfect choice for this setting. Good thing she ordered when she did, because soon autumn glaze that looks like this will no longer be available. Supply chain issues forced my...
'Tis the season...
It always feels like Christmas to me when I get customer installation photos, and that is especially true today with these pictures! So glad Santa and Mrs Claus seem to approve of this snowy scene. There is a set of four tree tiles in both corners of this kitchen backsplash. The subtle colors and design layout work very well. Many thanks to H.T. for including my tiles in your kitchen, and for sending these festive photos! I'm so honored that my tiles are part of this stunningly beautiful kitchen.
Emu Tiles at the Royal Exchange in London, England
In all likelihood, my work will never be in a museum, but this feels like the next best thing! I'm thrilled to know that some of my tiles are installed inside "The Royal Exchange" in London, at the swanky new restaurant "The Libertine" which recently opened in the vaults below the landmark, historic building The current structure was opened by Queen Victoria in 1844, but the original exchange was founded in 1571 on this very spot! Thanks so much to The Libertine for seeking out handmade tiles for this amazing restoration project. There were a wide variety of art tiles...
Urban Nature
Seems like I have been posting a lot of hearth photos lately! Let's mix it up and post some photos of a kitchen that proves that small is beautiful. This sweet little NYC kitchen looks out on a park, so the clients chose tiles that represent the plants and animals that they see outside their window. Nature is everywhere, even in one of the world's largest cities! They went with a fun asymmetric grouping over the range, and then sprinkled the remaining feature tiles around semi-randomly throughout the rest of the backsplash. The subway tiles are 3"x9" which works really...
