Custom Handmade Ceramic Tile
A Lake House Kitchen
My snail and frog tiles aren't usually oriented on the diagonal. For this special request, I modified them once they were out of their molds by cutting off the corners and reattaching them to make a diamond shape. (I promise I usually don't cut corners!) Only about a week after I sent these tiles out, I received these beautiful installation pictures in my inbox: I love the contrast between the black slate field tiles and white cupboards and feature tiles. The lighting in this room must be amazingly good, because these pictures really bring out the detail in the white feature...
Custom Tile for Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve in New Hope, PA
The good people of "Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve" recently commissioned me to make a 4" art tile based on their logo: The logo is lovely, so I am quite excited to see the finished tiles. The image above shows what I have so far. In sculpting this design, I used two colors of clay to accentuate the raised areas, the final tile will be made from a single color of clay and glazed with just one glaze... I am not sure which one yet. If my interpretation of the design gets an "ok" I will make a plaster mold this coming week...
Low Tech High Tech
EmuTile.com is powered by Drupal, a flexible, free, open-source content management system. As I explained in this post, I love Drupal. I hope it keeps gaining popularity and stays in active development for many years. But no matter how good of a run it has, it probably won't last as long as this tile I just made of the Drupal logo. Ceramics can last for thousands of years. Software, not so much (Note from DRU: Yeah, but look at COBOL!) Well, maybe. I will leave that to future archaeologists to decide. In any case, I like the fact that this tile...
Just Dandy
The sun came out this afternoon. The blue sky was irresistible, so DRU and I walked downtown and then up to campus. Despite the icy wind in my face, when I looked up at the brilliant blue I could almost imagine it was a summer day. To keep the illusion going, I am going to make a new tile with a summer theme. Not that I mind the winter, mind you. I just sometimes miss warm weather things, like swimming outdoors, wearing shorts, and picking dandelions. Ok, I don't exactly pick dandilions much anymore, I mostly pull them out of...
Happy Birthday, Drupal!
11 years ago today, Drupal version 1.0 was released. DRU and I celebrated early by giving the Drupal “Drop” a plaster bath. Earlier in the week, I had sculpted two tiles based on the Drupal logo, so over the weekend I made a mold of them while DRU took pictures. Ready to pour the plaster. It would have been nice to have pictures of the finished tiles today, but that didn't quite happen. All you Drupalists out there will just have to wait a little longer to see the world's first handmade Drupal tiles. (Update 2/15/12: Link to Finished Tile)...
