A Mayfly Kitchen
This delightful installation of 3"x3" Mayfly tiles in "Leaf Green" glaze is located in the United Kingdom. Mayflies have special significance for this family, so they decided to pay homage to them with their back splash design. They asymmetrical layout of the art tiles implies that the mayflies are in flight. Here is a slightly closer look: There was an unexpected size difference between the British made gray field tiles and the U.S. made art tiles. The homeowners managed to work around it with some clever and careful cuts, and the results are beautiful. Thank you so much, S.D., for...
Four New Tiles
New tiles have been added to our online store! Now available are the 2"x2" Buffalo, (shown below in watercolor blue glaze), the 4"x4" Cicada tile (shown in Autumn Glaze), the 4"x4" Sitting Cat (shown in celadon glaze below and leaf green above), And the 4"x4" Owl facing right (shown in Autumn Glaze): This last tile is meant to be a companion piece to my original owl. The two of them together look like this: To see pictures of all of these tiles in different glazes, please click on the links above. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank...
Two Colorful Tile Projects
My customers are such creative and interesting people! Sorting through my email archives, I came across photos of two charming and unique projects that I had not shared here yet. The first one is by K.P. She framed one of my four inch "Tree of Life" tiles in a frame of reclaimed wood. Some of the wood is painted, some is left natural. I love the little paintings on the square pieces of wood, especially the little tree on the orange background to the upper left. So sweet! The next project was completed by J.B. She made a mosaic style...
Whooo Likes Owls?
I do! That is why I make my owl design in both the four inch size, and the smaller two inch size (which is featured at the very top of this blog entry.) But up until now, all my owls have always faced left. Now, thanks to a request from "European Tile Art" in San Diego, CA, I am making owls that face to the right, as well. I printed out an image of my large owl tile and sculpted him a friend: I made a mold of this new owl and have already used it to press a few...
Getting Unstuck
Even though I absolutely adore my job, maybe I should try to take time off more than once every 3 and a half years. I am starting to think that there is some truth to the idea that taking vacation can actually improve productivity. I finished sending out the last of my Summer 2016 orders out yesterday at 4:30, officially beginning my longest closure ever. I am taking a six and a half week break from firing the kilns. It has been less than 24 hours since I finished, and it still feels weird. I keep thinking that I am forgetting to do something really important. But I am also starting to feel energized! I...
artTILE 2016
I am thrilled and honored to once again be a part of indigenous gallery's annual artTILE invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over 30 tile artists will be featured in this years' show, which runs from April 30th- June 12th. This year I submitted a lot of gray tiles! Here is a sneak peek of the kiln being unloaded... I also sent quite a few green tiles... If you love handmade tiles and are in the area, don't miss this show! It is going to be great! 2010 Madison RdCincinnati, Ohio 45208513.321.3750 http://www.indigenouscraft.com/mail@indigenouscraft.comopen 7 days a week,Mon-Fri 10-8, Sat 10-6, Sun 12-5
An Arts and Crafts Hearth
(When we switched to our current website, some lovely installation pictures never made it over from the old version of EmuTile.com. I am going to attempt to re- post all of those "lost" installations, starting with this one. Please note, this particular installation features "Northern Lights" glaze which has since been discontinued.) E.A. sent me these gorgeous pictures of her hearth. She ordered two of my 3"x3" Fleur tiles in Northern Lights glaze, and installed them herself. She found the field tiles on Craigslist and got them for a song; they were left over from someone else's installation. What a lucky find! They really complete the...
A Wetland Themed Kitchen
This is a very special kitchen. I have been holding onto these photos for months, hesitating to post them out of fear that my write up won't do them justice. But the reality is, photos this nice speak for themselves! They need to be shared and now is the time. So without further ado, behold the kitchen of Sue and Ted R: The plant and animal themed tiles are all Emu Tile, naturally (glaze is "leaf green.) The surrounding field tiles and decorative border tiles were made by another fine Ohio tile maker, Seneca Tile (glazes are "celadon," "eggshell," and "evergreen"). Over the stove...
