Arts and Crafts Tile
Maple Leaf Hearth
It has been far too long since I have posted installation pictures! Photographs of this lovely hearth showed up in my inbox this week, and there is no time like the present for me to share them with you. The client sent this explanation for their choice of tiles: "We tore out our old fireplace mantel/surround and I designed and built one more to the craftsman style we like. We searched forever to find the tiles that we felt would be perfect for the job. The leaf tiles represent the three types of trees we have in our yard. The black...
It is time for artTILE 2017 at indigenous gallery!
This is one of my favorite times of year. The blossoms are blooming, the leaves are budding, and indigenous gallery is having their annual artTILE extravaganza!! It is a huge honor for me to be a part of this invitational show. (They even put a picture of some of my tiny tiles on the back of the postcard!) If you have never been to indigenous gallery, you are missing out. I have been fortunate to be a part of every one of the previous artTILE shows, and they just keep getting better every year. There couldn't be a more perfect...
As seen in "This Old House Magazine"
Emu Tile have appeared in "This Old House Magazine" twice. Here they are (along with the work of other amazing tile makers) in a recent feature called "Animal art tiles:" In addition, our 3"x3" Sunflower tile appeared in a piece about a historic Sag Harbor cottage that was completely remodeled. Here is a link to that article: A Whaling Cottage Gets a Top-to-Bottom Redo
We Love Ginko Gallery
Yesterday the post office was closed, but that didn't stop us from making a tile delivery. Darrell and I took advantage of the nice weather to drive these three boxes of tiles to Ginko Gallery in Oberlin, OH. This packing job would not have been adequate for the mail, but it worked just fine for us yesterday. We have a tradition of delivering tiles to Ginko Gallery in person whenever possible. It is the first gallery ever to carry my work, so we have been going there for over a decade. We try to visit at least once a year....
Two Ways to Get Framed Tiles
Frames are now available! If you would like to order a tile framed in a beautiful, Ohio-made, craftsman style oak frame, you can do it two different ways. First, we are now carrying these frames and have added them to our online shopping cart. If place an order though our website, you should be able to check box that adds a frame for an additional fee. Remember, if you order this way our normal lead time to make the tile will apply. If you want to select from tiles that are in stock, you can order a framed tile directly from our frame supplier, Family Woodworks LLC in Piketon, Ohio. I just sent...
A Mini Video of Sculpting a Handmade Tile
Last week, my dear friend, Mandi brought some art materials over to my house so we could catch up with each other while we both worked. (Craft dates are so fun! Note to self: I need to hang out with more local artists.) She shot some footage with her iphone of me working, then she quickly edited it into a tiny video for me. What a sweet thing to do; she is a solid gold friend. Here I am sculpting my oak leaf design into the 3"x3" size: This video makes me realize Darrell and I could make some more short videos of different parts of the tile making process. I had been avoiding videos,...

Coming Soon: Buffalo Tile
In my last post, I said I would post some "in-progress" photos of the new 4"x4" tile I am working on for the retail shop at Frank Lloyd Wright's Graycliff Estate, which is located near Buffalo, New York. As promised, here they are: First picture: Almost finished sculpting. At this point, I showed it to my husband and he immediately said it reminded him of a Buffalo nickel, which thrilled me. Buffalo nickels (made from 1913- 1938) were a source of inspiration for this piece, but I hadn't told him. His comment felt like high praise! Second Picture: Ready to pour the plaster for the mold. Last...
