Tile Art

My customers are such creative and interesting people! Sorting through my email archives, I came across photos of two charming and unique projects that I had not shared here yet. The first one is by K.P. She framed one of my four inch "Tree of Life" tiles in a frame of reclaimed wood. Some of the wood is painted, some is left natural. I love the little paintings on the square pieces of wood, especially the little tree on the orange background to the upper left. So sweet! The next project was completed by J.B. She made a mosaic style...

I do! That is why I make my owl design in both the four inch size, and the smaller two inch size (which is featured at the  very top of this blog entry.) But up until now, all my owls have always faced left. Now, thanks to a request from "European Tile Art" in San Diego, CA, I am making owls that face to the right, as well. I printed out an image of my large owl tile and sculpted him a friend: I made a mold of this new owl and have already used it to press a few...

This is one of those rare customer installations that I actually got to see in person! Some friends here in town did a beautiful job mixing some of my handmade tiles with "wood-look" porcelain tiles in their newly remodeled bathroom. What a good idea! They get the appearance of wood with the durability of tile, which makes a ton of sense for a shower. I like how they chose to run the plank tiles horizontally, it makes me think of a sauna or spa. There are three groupings of three tiles each inserted around the shower at natural intervals. It...

A few months ago, I was contacted by an old friend. Linda Goik used to run "Local Girl Gallery" in Lakewood. "Local Girl" was a real asset to the community, as well as being one of the first galleries to carry my work. Like a lot of people, I loved that place and was sad when it closed in 2012. So naturally I was thrilled to find out that Linda recently became the shop manager for the nearby "BAYarts" gallery, and I jumped at the chance to have some of my tiles in their upcoming holiday show. Here is some...

(When we switched to our current website, some lovely installation pictures never made it over from the old version of EmuTile.com. I am going to attempt to re- post all of those "lost" installations, starting with this one. Please note, this particular installation features "Northern Lights" glaze which has since been discontinued.) E.A.  sent me these gorgeous pictures of her hearth.  She ordered two of my 3"x3" Fleur tiles in Northern Lights glaze, and installed them herself.  She found the field tiles on Craigslist and got them for a song; they were left over from someone else's installation. What a lucky find! They really complete the...

I can hardly believe it is that time of year already! The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, OH is gearing up for their annual holiday art sale/ fundraiser, "Gifts From the Heart of Nature," and I am pleased that my work will be included again this year. Darrell and I delivered several boxes of tiles on Sunday afternoon, and while we were there I picked up the above pretty postcard for the event: As always- many talented artists have work in the show! Here are a few of the tiles I submitted for the show this year: The show runs from  Saturday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Jan. 4,...

In my last post, I said I would post some "in-progress" photos of the new 4"x4" tile I am working on for the retail shop at Frank Lloyd Wright's Graycliff Estate, which is located near Buffalo, New York. As promised, here they are: First picture: Almost finished sculpting. At this point, I showed it to my husband and he immediately said it reminded him of a Buffalo nickel, which thrilled me. Buffalo nickels (made from 1913- 1938) were a source of inspiration for this piece, but I hadn't told him. His comment felt like high praise! Second Picture: Ready to pour the plaster for the mold. Last...

It has been way too long since I have posted customer installation pictures! Especially since I have been sitting on some really nice ones, including these: This pretty kitchen features a classic color palette of white, black and gray. The backsplash is a consists a combination of painted wood paneling and tile. The tile above the cook top is a mix of natural stone and ceramic tile. The centerpiece is a 6"x6" "Tree of Life" tile made by yours truly. The picture at the top takes a closer look. I love how this installation shows you don't have to use a lot of handmade tiles...
