Wow, it is surreal seeing my work in a book, especially a book as amazing as this one. The incomparable Marion Brandis has published her opus: "Handmade Tiles: Creative Techniques" and it is such an honor to see some Emu Tiles in the mix, alongside the work of Angela Evans, Reptile Tiles, and so many other talented and hardworking tile makers.
This means a lot to me because when I started making tiles over 20 years ago, I checked out certain books from the library again and again. I learned so many of the skills I use every day from books, and it makes me very happy to think that this book could become a roadmap for the next generation of tilemakers, and that I get to be a tiny part of it!
Marion asked me to demonstrate the technique I use to apply "night sky" glaze on my tiles, which involves applying black pigment, wiping in back off, and covering it with clear glaze:
She was also kind enough to include some examples of other completed tiles:
Above: 4x4 inch owl and mayfly tiles in watercolor blue and pacific blue glazes. Below: 4x4 inch possum tile in the (now discontinued) autumn glaze:
I must reiterate that I am only one of many tile makers who are featured! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the world of handmade tiles-whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, it’s an incredible resource.
