Tile Art
Sunflower Fun
I never know when customer installation pictures will show up in my inbox. When they do, opening the files feels like unwrapping a gift! It is so fun to see the creative ways in which people incorporate my tiles into their living space. It was definitely a treat to wake up to this lovely set of photos: This is actually the second time these tiles have been featured on this blog, the first time they were photographed uninstalled and as part of a montage. It is so great to seem them in their forever home over the sink and in...
Framed.
What a great concept: take an art tile, frame it with art tiles, and presto! Durable, washable wall art for the kitchen. Bonus: this is wall art that never needs straightening (after the initial installation, of course). This kitchen features three 6"x6" art tiles in northern lights glaze, framed up with a combination of 3"x6" and 3"x3" art tiles in buckwheat glaze: I can't tell from these pictures if the field tiles are natural stone or ceramic; in any case the color harmonizes beautifully with the buckwheat and northern lights glazes. The homeowner described the arrangement above as a "Sunburst."...
I am in love
If it is wrong to love a kitchen, then I don't want to be right. Because I love this kitchen. How could I not? The cabinets, counters and floor have a limited color palette, clean lines, and not too much ornamentation. This simplicity really sets off the fun, multi-colored art tiles. The high gloss, black granite counters create a mirror effect, further emphasizing the tiles. I made the patterned, relief tiles, the field tiles are by a different manufacturer- if I find out which one, I will give them credit here. Thanks to Susan Hall, of One Source Design, for...
Good Things Come in Large Packages
Look what a semi truck brought me yesterday. Two new kilns!!! After years of "making do," I am super excited to get modern, professional quality kilns. DRU and I will spend most of the weekend setting these beauties up (thanks, DRU!) and then I will do some test firing. After that, my workflow is really going to change for the better. More kiln space = more tiles in less time. Yay! Plus, I will finally be able to offer field tiles on the website. admiring the fine craftsmanship Stay tuned for updates!
Something Old, Something New
Earlier this month, I resized some of my old designs. Seven popular designs that were available in the 4"x4" size can now be made in the 2"x2" size as well. I also made one completely new design for good measure. I am thrilled with how they all came out and I hope you will like them, too "Oak Leaf" is the new design, so it is only available in the 2"x2" size at this time. But all the rest can be both big and small. All the new tiles are available in 10 glazes, but the glaze menu has not been...
Birds of a Feather
I decided that my 4"x8" heron tile needs a friend, so I am slowly constructing one. Time to make a mold! When it is done, I will be able to make two heron tiles facing each other. With the magic of Photoshop, I can approximate what that will look like: I will post pictures of an actual finished tile here as soon as one comes out of the kiln. If I Only Had a Shrink Ray...
...it would have been WAY faster to convert seven of my most popular 4"x4" tile designs to the 2"x2" size. But it would have been way less fun, so it is probably for the best that there is no such thing as a shrink ray. If you aren't familiar with my work, these tiles I just finished sculpting probably won't look all that small to you. But to me, they look amazingly, adorably tiny. Like fun sized candy bars. I have been making most these designs for several years in the 4"x4" size, so they feel like old friends. It...
Warning: These pictures may cause bathroom envy.
At least that is what happened to me when I opened an email and saw this amazing art tile installation. Every time I open up installation pictures from a customer, it feels like Christmas morning. Especially when the installation is beautifully done and the pictures are good quality, as is the case with these bathroom pictures from John Ueng-McHale, which feature my 3"x6" vine tiles: This bathroom is a classic; I love the old-fashioned subway tiles in white. And check out the amazing, retro black, white and grey hex tiles on the floor: I think the art tiles add just...
