Ceramic Handmade Tile Installations
A Kitchen in the Mountains of Western North Carolina
This lovely kitchen is near Asheville, North Carolina. The multicolored handmade tiles were chosen to represent the flora and fauna in the mountains in that part of the state. The cream colored, square tiles in the center of the panel are antique tiles from an architectural salvage store, and the matching subway tile surround was made by Cevica. Here is a close of the tiles that I made for this project, before they left the studio. The following message arrived along with the installation photos: The tiles show trees that grow on our wooded property and animals that live here...
A Bright and Cheery Texas Kitchen
It's a rare treat for me to see my work installed, so I was delighted when these photographs showed up in my inbox! I especially like how the tile panel shares the space between two windows with a well-stocked spice rack. It creates a visual focus that is both fun and functional. It feels very balanced, and entirely appropriate for a kitchen. A bright assortment of plant and animal tiles are interspersed with plain ones in matching glazes to make a unique and cheerful (and very cleanable) backsplash for the range. I was going to ask where they got the...
Blue Isle Kitchen
This post is a long time coming! The homeowners contacted me at the end of last year, just as I was getting ready to pause taking new orders for a couple of months so I could work on a really big project. They were willing to wait, but they needed a very specific glaze color for their project. Normally, I don't do custom colors, but I had some glazes that were in the right color family left over from a recent public art project. I sent a few samples, and "Blue Isle" was the clear winner! A sample of "Blue Isle"...
A Great, Gray Hearth
If you take a look at the decorations on this mantle, you can see how far behind I am on posting customer installation photos! Yes, those are Thanksgiving decorations and it is currently the end of June! Oops! Where does the time go? I remember working on this project very clearly because I was not feeling my best at the time. Last fall, I got bronchitis and covid almost back to back after attending the first two weddings I had been to since before the pandemic. Fortunately, I was still able to work and I don't think the quality of...
Traveling Tiles
In May of 2021, I shipped a set of tiles to Wyoming so they could be installed in a kitchen there. In April of 2023, I got an email from the person who ordered them, explaining that they had to move unexpectedly but they brought the tiles along so they could install them in their new bathroom in Minnesota! Here is the completed project: From the homeowner: "I’ve had so many compliments. Just wanted you to know your work is appreciated and admired. And that I’m enjoying seeing the tiles every day." What a luxurious place to bathe! I am...
New Home, Same Tiles
As I have mentioned before, occasionally a customer will install my tiles in their home, then move, then order more tiles to install in their new home. As you can imagine, this makes me very happy! This client previously installed my tiles in her bathroom years ago. Recently, when she moved from Oregon to California, she decided to order more tiles from me. This time around, she went with a slightly different mix of designs and glazes and had them installed in her kitchen, as well as both her bathrooms! For the kitchen she selected the "birds on a branch"...
Autumn's Swan Song
I have been using autumn glaze for almost 20 years and I love the warmth and richness it brings to a space, as well as how it harmonizes with wood and other natural materials. This kitchen is a great example of that! The backsplash was installed by the homeowner's daughter and I am impressed by what a good job she did. It turned out great and autumn glaze was the perfect choice for this setting. Good thing she ordered when she did, because soon autumn glaze that looks like this will no longer be available. Supply chain issues forced my...
All I want for my birthday is...
Tile installation photos! Did I say it feels like Christmas whenever I get customer installation photos? It also feels like my birthday. And that was especially true when I received these lovely photos a couple of days ago, on my actual birthday. It is an especially fun coincidence because this hearth just happens to be decked out in a celebratory pompom garland! The tiles are glazed in watercolor blue, but the color is lighter than usual because the client requested a lighter version, which I was happily able to achieve by applying only a single coat of glaze instead of...
