Decorative Wall Tiles
Blue Glaze, Blue Herons
When I received these lovely pictures of an Arts and Crafts hearth from Jeanne in Maine, I felt anything but blue! It is always super exciting for me when I get to see my work installed. These pictures were extra thrilling because this is the first time I have seen most of these particular tiles in a finished project. And what a project this is! The hearth creates a unique focal point in an appealing & airy space.... Here is an overall view, showing the handcrafted oak mantle, a charming painting of an ocean scene, and of course, handmade tiles!...
artTILE 2013
(The tiny row of green tiles above the elephant were made by yours truly.) It almost that time of year again! Every spring, indigenous gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio hosts an invitational exhibit featuring 30 - 40 tile artists. I am thrilled that my tiles will be part of the show this year. This year's show is shaping up to the biggest and best one yet! Here is a link to samples of work from some of the fantastic tile artists that will be included: http://indigenouscraft.com/arttiles Here is a sneak peak of part of my contribution: As I type this, these...
A Cheery Celadon Kitchen
I can hardly believe I got these beautiful installation pictures almost a month ago and I am only now posting them! I am currently working on several large orders, so I have been focused on making as many tiles as possible in my tiny studio. Blogging and updating this website have definitely taken a backseat to tile production of late. But I today I realized I don't want to wait any longer to share this pretty kitchen with you: The homeowners, with the help of designer Patsay Zakian-Greenough, selected an assortment of celadon glazed art tiles. Each design had special significance for...
A Creamy Kitchen
When my lovely cousin, Andrea, sent me these pictures of her new kitchen, they nearly knocked my socks off! I haven't seen this kitchen in person , but from the pictures I can tell that it is a wonderfully inviting room, and I am thrilled that my tiles are part of it. It is hard to imagine a more perfect setting for a "Birds on a Branch" set in Buckwheat glaze. The light colored subway tiles are by Daltile. They are 3"x6" matte finish, and the color is almond, which harmonizes really well with the creamy art tiles. The texture in the stone...
Back to work + new tile designs
Since returning from my hiatus, I have been blissfully busy in my newly clean & organized studio. But I have let this blog (and Facebook and twitter) lapse because I have too much to say and I don't know where to begin. Closing the studio for the first time felt really scary, but it was so worth it. Coming back, I feel energized & excited, it is like I am falling in love with making tiles all over again. I realize now that occasionally taking time off is essential for me to refill my well of inspiration, and clean and improve...
Mirror, Mirror...
..in a wood shop. More of the tiles I sent out last week have been installed! The good people of Woodcreek Furniture just sent me photographs of three projects they completed using my handmade tiles: two decorative mirrors and one Arts & Crafts style wooden frame. The frame looks so right around my 6"x6" Tree of Life tile in Watercolor Blue Glaze: Project two is a mirror that is surrounded by four of my 2"x2" animal tiles in spearmint glaze: A close up of the animal tiles appears at the bottom of this page. Speaking of animals, I love the...
New Rooster and Bee Tiles Installed
I sent out the first of my new rooster and bee tiles four short days ago, so I am surprised and delighted that I just received pictures of some of them installed. That was fast! This a great tile layout for a kitchen. I love how the slate wall tiles extend onto the counter in stripes. (more pictures below) The cinnamon glaze on the art tiles plays off the reds & browns in the stone. These designs have significance for the homeowners; a rooster and bee are historical symbols of the town in which they live. This local connection makes the installation...
A Tree Themed Hearth
Tree art is a natural choice for fireplace decor, since fireplaces burn wood & wood comes from trees. Using representations of trees in hearth design pays homage to the trees that are burned there. These installation photos I recently received are a great illustration of this idea. And as an added bonus, one of tree tiles featured is my brand new 4"x4" oak leaf tile. It looks great installed! Close up of the oak leaf tile in the afternoon sun. The color of the glaze looks so right with the stone tile and wood floor. Earth tones and neutrals blend together...
