Handmade Tile
Urban Nature
Seems like I have been posting a lot of hearth photos lately! Let's mix it up and post some photos of a kitchen that proves that small is beautiful. This sweet little NYC kitchen looks out on a park, so the clients chose tiles that represent the plants and animals that they see outside their window. Nature is everywhere, even in one of the world's largest cities! They went with a fun asymmetric grouping over the range, and then sprinkled the remaining feature tiles around semi-randomly throughout the rest of the backsplash. The subway tiles are 3"x9" which works really...
A Birch Fireplace Surround
No, the mantle isn't made of birch; the handmade subway tiles that surround the feature tiles are in a new glaze called "birch" which I am a bit smitten with at the moment. It is so yummy looking, it reminds me toast. Or maybe a toasted marshmallow? The feature tiles are glazed in "Autumn" which provides a nice contrast with the field tiles and also harmonizes nicely with the woodwork. above: close up of the "Birds on a Branch" set in autumn glaze This fireplace is part of a historic home right here in northeast Ohio, and the installation was...
An Arts and Crafts Hearth
Really pleased that my tiles are a focal point in this inviting New Jersey living room. One of the homeowners is a shop teacher so he installed the tiles and woodwork himself with great care and precision. He sent a nice note along with the photos that said, "Everything came out the way we wanted and your tiles added a signature touch. We get a lot of compliments." I didn't make the grey field tiles, only the feature tiles. The next 3 photos were taken during the installation process. Above and below are close ups of the feature tiles before they were grouted. ...
A fireplace makeover
I love a good before and after! Scroll down to see this fireplace before the re-do. Feature tiles are glazed in "autumn." Not sure which company made those lovely field tiles, but I like them. Such an improvement from the "before:" Thank you S.T. for including my tiles in your project and for taking the time to share photos!
A marriage of wood and clay
These photos came from a woman who discovered a passion for woodworking in retirement. All three of these pieces look like heirlooms to me. So honored she chose to make my tiles part of them! (She asked to remain anonymous since she doesn't sell any of her work.) Thank you so much, H. for sharing these photos!
Hello, 2021!
We are officially done with 2020, and I don't think anyone is sad to see it end. Thank you all so much for your amazing support during a very challenging year. I am unbelievably fortunate that I was able to stay healthy and employed all year, and connect with so many great people through my work. Really, I can't thank you all enough. I am taking today (mostly) off since it is a holiday, but here are some scenes from my studio from yesterday, the last day of 2020. Above: Tiles drying, and tiles ready to come out of the kiln. These...
It's too late to order online for Christmas but you can still shop local galleries
At this point if you order tiles online they will ship out after Christmas, but if you have your heart set on giving an Emu Tile as a Christmas present, there is still an option that might work depending on where you are located. Here is a link to a list of all the bricks and mortar galleries who sell my work: https://emutile.com/pages/handmade-ceramic-tile-gallery-list Many of these small businesses offer curbside pickup. Call ahead to check. The tiles pictured here are on the way to River Light Gallery in Peninsula, Ohio and should be available to purchase in a day or...
A Cabin Kitchen
Doesn't this kitchen seem inviting? It's in a log cabin in the Northeast. Over the stove, there are two six by six inch "Birds on a Branch" tiles surrounded by two by two inch tiles featuring various plants and animals. Normally "birds on a branch" is a three tile set; I like how the homeowners mixed it up by making it shorter and adding an assortment of two by twos. Here is a close up of the smaller tiles before they were installed: The woman who lives in this house told me that her father, a second generation tile setter,...
