Handmade Tiles
It is time for artTILE 2017 at indigenous gallery!
This is one of my favorite times of year. The blossoms are blooming, the leaves are budding, and indigenous gallery is having their annual artTILE extravaganza!! It is a huge honor for me to be a part of this invitational show. (They even put a picture of some of my tiny tiles on the back of the postcard!) If you have never been to indigenous gallery, you are missing out. I have been fortunate to be a part of every one of the previous artTILE shows, and they just keep getting better every year. There couldn't be a more perfect...
Three Festive Installations
I am so pleased to share these photos! All three of these projects are by the same family. They mixed different sizes of art tiles in various shades of green, brown and gold with 1"x1" small glass and quartz tiles to great effect. The kitchen island pictured above has a light under the edge of the counter so it looks extra pretty at night. The homeowners say they have received many compliment so far, and I can see why. They created a similar effect on a smaller scale for their hearth. They used 4"x4" handmade tiles along with more of...
As seen in "This Old House Magazine"
Emu Tile have appeared in "This Old House Magazine" twice. Here they are (along with the work of other amazing tile makers) in a recent feature called "Animal art tiles:" In addition, our 3"x3" Sunflower tile appeared in a piece about a historic Sag Harbor cottage that was completely remodeled. Here is a link to that article: A Whaling Cottage Gets a Top-to-Bottom Redo
Birds and Leaves
This bathroom sink features a "Birds on a Branch" triptych and two field tiles set as a back splash. These tiles were specially made with a "bull nose" or slightly rounded edge on the top the the right and left sides. The glaze is "Celadon." The wall color, and even the soap, are similar in color to the handmade tiles. The shower also features handmade tiles. For the shower, the homeowners selected tiles in the same glaze, but in a smaller size. You can see a close up of one of these two inch by two inch tiles at the...
Four New Tiles
New tiles have been added to our online store! Now available are the 2"x2" Buffalo, (shown below in watercolor blue glaze), the 4"x4" Cicada tile (shown in Autumn Glaze), the 4"x4" Sitting Cat (shown in celadon glaze below and leaf green above), And the 4"x4" Owl facing right (shown in Autumn Glaze): This last tile is meant to be a companion piece to my original owl. The two of them together look like this: To see pictures of all of these tiles in different glazes, please click on the links above. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank...
Two Colorful Tile Projects
My customers are such creative and interesting people! Sorting through my email archives, I came across photos of two charming and unique projects that I had not shared here yet. The first one is by K.P. She framed one of my four inch "Tree of Life" tiles in a frame of reclaimed wood. Some of the wood is painted, some is left natural. I love the little paintings on the square pieces of wood, especially the little tree on the orange background to the upper left. So sweet! The next project was completed by J.B. She made a mosaic style...
Whooo Likes Owls?
I do! That is why I make my owl design in both the four inch size, and the smaller two inch size (which is featured at the very top of this blog entry.) But up until now, all my owls have always faced left. Now, thanks to a request from "European Tile Art" in San Diego, CA, I am making owls that face to the right, as well. I printed out an image of my large owl tile and sculpted him a friend: I made a mold of this new owl and have already used it to press a few...
Studio Improvements
This may not look like much to you... ...but to me it looks like Christmas, my birthday, and the Fourth of July all rolled into one. I am so happy that my studio is back together and I am making tiles again. Thanks to a lot of hard work, the studio is cleaner and better organized than ever before. The work-space pictured above doubles as my glazing and packing area. The next picture was taken from the exact same spot, but with the camera pointed in a different direction. In the foreground is the slab roller, which I use to make field tiles. The tile pressing room...
