Handmade Tile

I love the combination of glazes on these four 4"x4" tiles. Clockwise, from top left: 4"x4" Spring Oak in Cinnamon Glaze, 4"x4" Elm in Buckwheat Glaze, 4"x4" Tree of Life in Autumn Glaze, 4"x4" Willow in Northern Lights Glaze. These four glazes play well together and with natural material like stone or wood. On these four tree tiles, they almost create a four- seasons effect, though I am not exactly sure which tile would represent which season. I am planning to use one of these four glazes on my submissions to the upcoming artTILE exhibition at indigenous gallery in Cincinnati. So excited to...

A new tile I started last month is ready! "Spring Blooms," a 4"x8" tile (shown here in leaf green glaze) is now available in the online store. A few words about the Leaf Green Glaze: It is absolutely one of my favorite glazes. It has a depth and richness that is hard to describe and, unfortunately, even harder to photograph. It is super shiny, the most glossy of the group, and no matter how I try to take good photos of it it always is either too dark or gets glare. In the picture above, I tried to photoshop out the bright...

EmuTile.com is powered by Drupal, a flexible, free, open-source content management system. As I explained in this post, I love Drupal. I hope it keeps gaining popularity and stays in active development for many years. But no matter how good of a run it has, it probably won't last as long as this tile I just made of the Drupal logo. Ceramics can last for thousands of years. Software, not so much (Note from DRU: Yeah, but look at COBOL!) Well, maybe. I will leave that to future archaeologists to decide. In any case, I like the fact that this tile...

Technically, my handmade art tiles are all natural and calorie free! But that doesn't mean you should attempt to satisfy your Valentine's sweet tooth with an "Emu Tile Sampler." Really, don't do it. Just because they look like candy doesn't mean they will melt in your sweetheart's mouth. On the other hand, if you are looking for a gift (for yourself or someone else you love) that can be enjoyed year round for a lifetime, tiles may be just the thing. Move over diamonds; tiles are not forever, but they last a very long time :-) Happy Valentine's Day from Emu...

I love when creative people do cool things with my tiles and send me pictures. Jerry from Mazco Builders made these unique end tables using two of my 3"x3" art tiles, the triple ginkgo leaf and the cardinal, each framed in a pinwheel top. According to Jerry's wife, these pictures were taken in his studio and do not capture the true quality of the pieces. She says they are exquisite in person, and I believe her. Fine woodworking and art tiles go together very well. both tiles are pictured in Autumn Glaze Thanks to Mazco Construction for taking the time...

Meet "Hazel Tree Interiors," the newest addition to the list of shops that carry Emu Tile. (60’ mural on the side of the building by Kelly James Tighe) As an UA alum with a lot of love for Akron, Ohio, I had been hoping for years that I would find a venue for my art tiles somewhere in the Rubber City. I can't imagine a better place than Hazel Tree Interiors. Today, I met Karen Starr and Jon Haidet at their beautiful interior design studio / framing shop on the near west side. I felt right at home there and...

The first test firing of our "new" kiln was a success! This vintage piece of brick and electronics came to us courtesy of our neighbor, who came across it while helping her mother-in-law clean out her garage.  This kiln had been left there by one of her sons who moved away, and our neighbor thought we might be able to use it.  We gratefully accepted the gift, then proceeded to store it for many moons.  Recently, with the increased volume of orders and and requests for field tiles, it occured to me that another kiln that is almost twice a...

I am working on new print materials to go with the spiffed up website, and this is what I have come up with so far.  Also thinking of designing stickers and postcards with a similar feel. Can't wait to get them printed so I can include them with orders!
